Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic has shifted the educational system almost all around the world from traditional classroom to online learning. This study investigates the impact of learning English online on FPT students amid the pandemic. The research was conducted using mixed methods based on two main sources of data: the qualitative data collected from focus group interviews with nine students, and the quantitative data gathered from 90 students at FPT university. The findings reveal that students had different attitudes towards learning English online. In addition, the study also indicates that the majority of participants were satisfied with their lecturers, online materials, and learning tools when learning online. However, the findings discover that there was substantially less interaction among students as well as between teachers and students. Furthermore, although students did achieve improvement in their English skills when learning online, the majority of them were encountering difficulties in Listening and Speaking skills. The study also reveals suggestions made by students in order to improve the situation. In the basis of the findings, pedagogical implications are discussed.
