Students' perception about the impact of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation on English speaking skills

Abstract

Learners' mastery of four language skills is essential to determine their success in English. However, one of the most critical skills that should be mastered by the students is speaking, which is deemed particularly challenging in a variety of contexts as many aspects of knowledge of the English language are required to be incorporated to make successful communication. The present study aims at exploring the motivational factors contributing to English speaking skills among Vietnamese tertiary learners. The study employed a quantitative approach, drawing upon using a survey questionnaire to collect data. The findings indicated the differential effects of intrinsic and extrinsic motivations on levels of English speaking skills.
