Abstract: Language learning applications, or apps, have emerged for a long time and continue to be popular due to their educational potential. The use of these apps in teaching and learning has increased significantly in recent years, and Vietnam is no exception. Despite their increasing popularity and usage, empirical research on what students think about the role of apps in language learning is scant. With the hope to contribute to the literature, this study investigates students’ perceptions of apps in learning English, their use of apps, and their suggestions for better use of apps to study English. To achieve these aims, survey questionnaires and interviews were used. Data gained from the surveys and interviews were analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative methods. The research findings showed that the students had a positive perception of using technology-assisted apps in English language learning. Also, the students use the app most often for vocabulary and pronunciation, and least often for grammar and writing. While students fully acknowledged the potential advantages of apps, low self-discipline was the primary obstacle to their successful utilization of apps for English learning. Besides, teachers and institutional support might have a significantly positive effect on their learning process. Based on these findings, our research suggests implications towards more effective use of technology-assisted applications
