Abstract:
Numerous psychological challenges are often disregarded by many Vietnamese youth. The prevalent presence of the "people pleaser" phenomenon contributes to these issues, as it negatively impacts mental health by causing individuals to prioritize others' satisfaction at the expense of their own needs and self-worth. This behavior is closely tied to how young people navigate social relationships. Significantly, this matter impedes individuals from openly expressing emotions, resulting in diminished self-assurance and a loss of personal identity. People pleasers try to change their behavior to please others by doing what they want, without caring about what they want or need themselves. They often only care about meeting the needs of others and suppress their own emotions and needs. They usually don’t know their limits and don’t dare to say no when asked (Lcsw, 2020; Briggs et al., 1980; Charlie, 2023). A survey conducted by the Tuoi Sac team previously showed that 76% of young people aged 18-24 in HCM City had heard of the term “People Pleaser”, but there was still a lot of uncertainty about the impact of becoming a people pleaser. Moreover, the research also demonstrated that the “people pleaser” phenomenon was widespread among the young population.Young people must know the indicators of people-pleasing behavior and comprehend its consequences on their well-being. Furthermore, young people need to realize that having self-respect will enable them to improve their behavior to please others
Recognizing this problem, the “Tuoi Sac Team” group, consisting of four members, implemented the ‘haihoa’ project from the end of September to the beginning of December 2023.
